Surrey BC - Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Wednesday, June 21, from 3 to 8pm at the newly designated venue, the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale, (17728 64 Ave, Surrey).

Hosted by the sǝmyámǝ (Semiahmoo), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), and q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nations, this Indigenous-led event is an opportunity to acknowledge and show respect and admiration for Indigenous Peoples past, present and future and to share cultural history, spirit, experiences, stories, song, art and dance with each other and the community.

“We invite everyone to join us in honouring the rich culture and history of Indigenous Peoples across Canada,” says Mayor Brenda Locke. “The National Indigenous Peoples Day event has grown exponentially over the years, and we are thrilled to announce a new venue at the City’s Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre, right at the heart of Cloverdale. This event is a testament to our commitment to acknowledging and respecting the ancestral territories of the Coast Salish Peoples.“

“The National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration and Wellness Event is a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate the diverse Indigenous cultures of these lands, as well as all others who have made this beautiful part of British Columbia their home, and finally, we want to acknowledge the support pillars of this event the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association and City of Surrey” said Harley Chappell (Xwopokton), elected Chief of Semiahmoo First Nation.

Event schedule:

  • 4:30 pm – Welcome by Semiahma (Semiahmoo), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), and q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nations
  • 4:30-7:30pm - Cultural Sharing
  • 5-7 pm – Community Kitchen opens
  • 7:30 pm – Closing
  • 7:30-8 pm – Cultural Vocalists

The in-person event will include cultural sharing from the local First Nations with teachings and practice through art, music, storytelling and dance, including:

  • XiQuelem, (Eugene Harry)
  • Salish Thunderbird (Xwelmexw Shxwexwos)
  • Inuit Throat Singing by PIQSIQ
  • Nadine Gagné, BC Provincial Advisor for Aboriginal Supported Child Development
  • Candace “Brown Bear Woman” Hill Trevena
  • Stars of the North Drum Group, (LaDonna Wiks-Joseph name by Wata)
  • Métis Jigging by Madelaine McCallum (Sukaskieskwew)
  • And more!

The City of Surrey is situated on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the sǝmyámǝ (Semiahmoo), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), and q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen) land-based Nations who have been stewards of this land since time immemorial.
