Update: Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy
Managed Retreat option to be removed from the Crescent Beach study area.
Surrey, BC – In response to additional feedback from directly impacted stakeholders from Crescent Beach the Managed Retreat option is being removed from the Crescent Beach study area. No further analysis will be conducted on this option and it will not be recommended by staff in the draft Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy (CFAS) to be brought forward in spring 2019.
The city will continue to investigate and evaluate the Crescent Beach community’s preferred option of an Expanded Edge and its second preferred option of a Barrier Island/Spit.
As we move forward with the development of CFAS, the city will expand its monitoring of;
- Sea level changes,
- Ground subsidence,
- Long-term beach erosion,
- Storm surge and wave damage
- Seasonal water pooling
An information report will be forwarded to City Council in the New Year with detailed analysis of Crescent Beach’s preferred long-term option of an Expanded Edge. The city will continue further consultation with the residents and businesses of Crescent Beach in the development of the Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy.
With our climate changing and anticipated sea levels rising, the Province of BC has directed municipalities to plan for at least 1 metre sea rise by 2100 and 2 metres by 2200. The City of Surrey has undertaken a 3 year, 5 phase process to develop a Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy for the city’s floodplain. Through public consultation, CFAS seeks to develop a broadly supported adaptation strategy for coastal flooding to an area which is home to residential neighbourhoods, businesses, internationally significant natural habitats and provincially critical infrastructure.
The City of Surrey is a global leader on climate action, and has joined the Compact of Mayors, the world's largest coalition of city leaders addressing climate change by pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, tracking their progress and preparing for the impacts of climate change. The Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy and the latest information on the development process can be found here.
