World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15, 2024
Did you know that the basic human rights of older Canadians are being challenged and undercut every day?
- 1 in 6 seniors globally experience elder abuse.
- As many as 10% of BC seniors will experience some form of abuse in their later years.
- One in 12 seniors will experience financial abuse caused by close family members or trusted friends.
This has a significant impact on the lives of older adults and families; and is not limited to race, gender, culture, or circumstance, and regardless of whether the abuse is physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect or self neglect.
The City will be lighting the City Plaza in purple lights on June 15 in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
