Revised October 9, 2020
Request for Expression of Interest
The City of Surrey invites Expressions of Interest from professional artists or artist teams to create an iconic sculpture to serve as a landmark and gateway feature near the Fraser Heights Recreation Centre at 160 Street and 105 Avenue in Surrey.
PROJECT VISION & THEME:
Fraser Heights’ residents, who participated in the public art planning consultation meetings, recommended the values of community, diversity and nature to inspire artists in their artwork concept development. The location near the Recreation Centre was recommended by residents and is a highly visible location. An artwork located here will serve as a landmark for the Fraser Heights neighbourhood, greeting those travelling by car from the Trans-Canada Highway as well as from neighbouring Surrey areas. This location will also welcome everyone participating in programs at the Fraser Heights Recreation Centre
Fraser Heights is a very active and multicultural community. Residents enjoy their views of the Fraser River and the Coastal Mountains and a strong sense of community due in part to people meeting each other while enjoying walking, running, cycling, or playing with their families in the many parks and green spaces. Supporting residents’ active lifestyle as well as their appreciation for nature, is the nearby multi-use Fraser Heights Greenway and two pedestrian overpasses that provide residents with walking or cycling connection to other neighbourhoods in Guildford and more parks and trails. Fraser Height’s northern border is the South Fraser Perimeter Road and the Fraser River. The south is bordered by the Trans-Canada Highway. East of Fraser Heights’ residential area is the Surrey Bend Regional Park along the Fraser River, and one of the pedestrian overpasses connects Fraser Heights directly to Tynehead Regional Park.
The artwork budget is $90,000 inclusive of all costs including artist fees, design, materials, insurance, all engineering expenses, fabrication, delivery, installation, travel and taxes. Foundation for the sculpture will be supplied by the City of Surrey.
