This is a unique opportunity to create do-it-together art projects and learn a range of art media shoulder-to-shoulder with emerging to established mentoring artists. Free drop-in, all ages welcome!

All sessions take place at Surrey Art Gallery unless otherwise stated.

Printmaking with Atheana Picha

Create your own artwork using print making techniques with artist Atheana Picha!

Atheana Picha is a Coast Salish multimedia artist from the Kwantlen First Nation. Currently working with ceramics, carving, and painting, she is a two time recipient of the YVR Art Foundation Emerging Artist Scholarship. Having returned to Langara College after graduating in 2019, she is continuing to learn to carve from Squamish artist Aaron Nelson-Moody, and is expanding her knowledge of print-making techniques. As the youngest person to participate in the Vancouver Mural Festival in 2018, Atheana continues to work in public art.

Performance Art with Carol Sawyer

Learn about performance art as you improvise and express yourself with artist Carol Sawyer! Using a wide range of materials, we will make our own props and costumes.

Carol Sawyer is a visual artist and singer who works with photography, installation, video, and improvised music. She graduated from Emily Carr with a major in photography, and earned an interdisciplinary MFA at SFU, combining studies in visual art, music, video and theatre. Over the past 20 years, she has taught numerous studio courses at ECUAD and SFU. Since the early 1990’s her artwork has explored the connections between photography and fiction, performance, memory, and history. Her ongoing project The Natalie Brettschneider Archive, selections of which were exhibited at the SAG in 2012 as part of Scenes of Selves, Occasions for Ruses, curated by Jordan Strom, was exhibited recently in a solo shows at the Carelton University Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, and will travel to the Koffler Art Gallery in Toronto in April 2020. A book about this project is in production, to be published in the spring. Sawyer performs regularly in improvised music contexts.  Her work is represented by Republic Gallery, Vancouver.

Ceramics with Amelia Butcher

Create your own ceramics with artist Amelia Butcher!

Amelia Butcher grew up in Peru and British Columbia, Canada. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (concentration in ceramics) from Emily Carr University in 2013 and since has taught and worked in studio spaces all over the Lower Mainland. She produces sculptural and functional ceramic work with decorated surfaces, mixing porcelain with narrative cartoons and casual illustration. Her artistic and teaching practice encompasses painting and drawing as well as clay slipcasting, wheel throwing and handbuilding. She is a founding member of the Dusty Babes Collective and currently works in their communal studio in Surrey, B.C.
