At last night’s Regular Council meeting, Surrey City Council received a report outlining the major accomplishments achieved in 2023 to date.

Surrey, BC – At last night’s Regular Council meeting, Surrey City Council received a report outlining the major accomplishments achieved in 2023 to date. Under the direction and leadership of Council, the City of Surrey has moved ahead on major projects to improve livability, enhance public safety, deliver new infrastructure that will prepare the City for future growth. 

“In the 12 months since this new City Council was sworn in, we have made significant progress in improving the quality of life in Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “From building new infrastructure to enhancing public safety, Council has worked hard to improve the livability of our growing city. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our first year and I thank staff for their efforts in meeting and, in many instances, exceeding Council’s ambitious agenda.”

Highlights of major accomplishments include:

  • $100 million in transportation projects such as:
    • 80th Ave improvements in Newton
    • 32nd Ave widening from 184 St. to 188 St.
  • Third ice sheet added to Cloverdale Arena
  • In partnership with TransLink, the addition of Bus Rapid Transit from City Centre to South Surrey
  • Streamlining permitting and inspections with addition of new online options
  • New funding for additional 25 RCMP officers, 20 Fire Services personnel, and 10 Bylaw officers
  • Re-establishment of Public Safety Committee dissolved by previous City Council
  • Adoption of City’s Climate Change Action Strategy
  • 370 new childcare spaces through securement of Federal and Provincial funding

The City of Surrey was also recognized internationally and nationally for 15 awards in 2023 including:

  • UBCM Community Excellence Award for the anti-gang SAFE Program
  • NAFA National Clean Air Award for the Surrey Operations Centre
  • Excellence in Economic Development Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council for the City’s Supply Chain Resiliency Program
