It's Not Just Books and Studying

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a library—borrowing books or a quiet place to study? Your library is much more than that! The Youth Services librarians, Teen Library Council and other partner organizations have been working closely to bring you exciting events year-round. Best of all, these events are FREE, so you don’t have to think twice before participating.

Learn New Skills at Teen Tech Week

The Surrey Libraries – City Centre branch is hosting Teen Tech Week for youth interested in learning about STEM. Events like Forensic Science Breakout Challenge, Tech Tear Apart with the City of Surrey IT Department, and an Introduction to Dot and Dash robot workshop cater to absolute beginners and those with some experience. There are more events during the week to check out.

Learn about Social Impact

Learn about social issues like mental health (and how to manage anxiety) and your environmental impact. Attend The Environment and Youth: How to Make a Difference workshop in partnership with the Khalsa Secondary School’s Forces of Nature Environment Club to learn how we can work together to support the environment.

During Teen Tech Week, the Diversity in STEM Workshop, presented in partnership with Empower the Future, will focus on underrepresented individuals – LGBTQ2SI+, individuals with disabilities, refugees, immigrants, and women – who are interested in STEM.

Do Some Self-care and Create Crafts

After a long and stressful week at school, spend some time to take care of yourself. Relax in a spa-like space and create some self-care treats like bath bombs, tote bags, and lotions. Indulge in calming activities like yoga, colouring and puzzles as well.

Build Your Leadership Skills

Be part of a Teen Library Council and help plan and lead events, provide feedback on services and programs for youth, and be library ambassadors for the larger community. There are four TLCs to be part of: Surrey Libraries – City Centre, Fleetwood, Guildford, and Semiahmoo.

You can also be a role model for a young reader by applying to the Envision Financial Reading Buddies program. Create a safe and supportive environment to help children grow their literacy skills while gaining volunteer experience and hours.  Surrey Libraries – City Centre, Cloverdale Pop-Up and Strawberry Hill branches are currently accepting applications.

Get Yourself Ready for a Job

Looking to get a part-time job after school? Achieve your goals by attending a workshop to check-up your resume or get tips for networking and interview skills. Workshops are presented in partnership with WorkBC. After the workshops, there will be a Job Fair hosted by Options with funding from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Other Cool Things that Spark Interest

Each library offers fun programs that you can explore. The Nihon Go! Japanese Culture Club at Surrey Libraries – City Centre branch lets you connect with others over anime, snacks and cultural discussions. You could watch a movie after-hours while enjoying food like sushi, bubble tea or sundaes. You can even have a game board night with your friends and get experts from Imperial Hobbies to help out with popular games.
