Surrey, BC – During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council approved a contract for the design of 132 Street Arterial Widening to four lanes from 72 Avenue to 80 Avenue. The $372,000 contract was awarded to Aplin & Martin Consultants. Council also authorized the General Manager of Engineering to execute an estimated $720,000 construction contract to Aplin upon successful completion of the design phase.

“Expanding this busy corridor in Newton to four lanes is a project that is integral to improving Surrey’s transportation network,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “As the fastest growing City in the region, it is essential we take a comprehensive approach to managing our transportation network. Council has prioritized high growth neighbourhoods for road expansion in order to ease congestion and reduce commute times for our citizens.”

Work within this Contract involves engineering services for the detail design to develop a four-lane arterial widening along 132 Street between 72 Avenue and 80 Avenue to improve traffic movements, safety and integrated cycling-walking facilities where possible. The design phase involves overall project management, design works, railway coordination with Southern Rail and agencies effected by the proposed work, and tendering, while the construction phase includes contract administration, inspection, and post construction services.

The design work is expected to be completed by October 2024. Construction of this project is anticipated to begin in 2025, subject to Council approval of funding should the necessary property acquisitions and Southern Rail approvals be secured. Staff anticipate that the project could be completed in 2026.

Funding for this Contract is available within the 2023 Transportation Budget.

The total capital value of the projects is estimated to be $14.6 million.
