Surrey, B.C. – At the June 28 Regular Council meeting, City Council awarded two additional design and construction contracts as part of the Surrey Invests capital projects plan.

“It was only last December that Council approved this new capital program in the 2021 budget,” said City of Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “That’s why I am so pleased with the speed in advancing these vital projects. City Council is fully aware of the need for additional recreational facilities as Surrey continues to grow. This significant investment shows Council’s commitment to the Surrey Invests capital program.”

A contract was awarded to Shape Architecture Inc. for the design and construction administration of the City Centre Sports Complex. Phase 1 of this major project will be integrated into the existing Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre.

The expansion of amenities and services at the new City Centre Sports Complex site will advance the development of City Centre downtown core while enhancing community services to meet the growing recreation needs in the City Centre and North Surrey area. The new facility will complement the existing facilities in the area and offer additional community space for residents of all ages to participate in sports, fitness, preschool and after school programming in a safe, inclusive and healthy environment.

Design for the City Centre Sports Complex project will commence immediately with public consultation as the first phase of the project, followed by design and construction expected to commence in 2022-23. The Project is expected to be completed in 2024-25.

A contract was awarded to Team Rochon Inc./GTR Turf for the supply and installation of artificial turf product at two athletic parks on Field #7 Newton Athletic Park and Field #8 at South Surrey Athletic Park. This will include supply and installation of shock pad, synthetic turf carpet and infill.

These projects were part of the 20 plus major capital projects approved by City Council as part of the Five-Year (2021-2025) Financial Plan in the 2021 budget. Other projects include the Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex, the Newton Community Centre Facility Project and the South Surrey Athletic Park Athletics Track.
