Surrey, BC – At Monday’s Regular Council meeting, City Council approved the construction of a new walking track at Newton Athletic Park. The new rubberized walking track will be built in the south area of the park around the perimeter of the sports fields and will connect with existing paths in the park. The walking track will be 600 metres long and 3.5 metres wide.

“Newton Athletic Park is a major sporting and recreation destination in Surrey and we’re continually exploring amenities to support the growing needs of the Newton area and other Surrey communities,” said Mayor McCallum. “The new rubberized walking track will be a welcome addition for seniors and families and anyone who wants to enjoy the park or keep active. With work getting underway on this $1 million dollar project, the new track will be opened to the public before year’s end.”

The final rubberized top-coat will be completed in spring 2022. The project complements other enhancement work planned for 2021 at the Newton Athletic Park site, including a new artificial turf field, new lighting and drainage and irrigation improvements.  In addition, a new washroom/changeroom building is planned for construction at Newton Athletic Park in 2022.

This project is part of the Surrey Invests initiative, which includes other major projects include such as the Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex, the Newton Community Centre facility project and the South Surrey Athletic Park Athletics Track.
