Emma, a local highschool student, has come full circle with City of Surrey day camps, developing valuable experiences and learning new skills along the way.

Based out of South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre, the City of Surrey day camp leader has enjoyed a rewarding journey from participant, to volunteer, and now employee.

As a camp participant, Emma—who at the time was a little shy and not sure what to expect—was welcomed by engaging day camp leaders who quickly made her feel comfortable and welcome.

At age 14 she transitioned from participant to a volunteer spring break day camp assistant. In addition to helping her complete her volunteer hours graduation requirement, the position provided an opportunity to gain valuable employment skills, help the community and work with children.

“I developed these relationships with the children, and we watched each other grow in our roles—this is where I felt like a mentor and a leader.” – Emma, Summer Day Camp Leader

Valuing her experience as both a day camp participant and volunteer, the City of Surrey hired Emma as a day camp leader, a role that she feels has had a positive impact on her participants, as well as her personal development.

Emma says she enjoys helping participants learn and discover new things about themselves, including what activities they are most passionate about. The job has also given her confidence and helped her develop strong communications skills.

She also enjoys running into former participants in the community and talking about the fun times they shared at camp. Parents often express their gratitude for creating an environment where their children could grow.
