Virtual Surrey Canada Day Invites Community Participation to Set New Guinness World Record

Surrey, BC – Virtual Surrey Canada Day, presented by KPU, has announced its support in the Canada Day Drumming Virtual Celebration and its worldwide Guinness World Records™ attempt for the “Most People Performing a Drum Roll Online Simultaneously.” Canada Day Drumming joins people from all cultural backgrounds across the world to come together to promote diversity and multicultural harmony. The Canada Day Drumming Virtual Celebration takes place at 10 am, and Virtual Surrey Canada Day broadcast begins at 10:30 am on July 1, 2021.

The Guinness World Records™ attempt will be broadcast live across participating Canadian cities and on social media platforms around the world. The record will be achieved once registered individuals or groups are shown to be drumming simultaneously for five minutes starting at 10:15 am on July 1. If the record is achieved, all registered participants will be eligible to purchase an official Certificate of Participation issued by Guinness World Records™. Following the world record attempt, Virtual Surrey Canada Day’s Family and Evening Show will experience Surrey’s Canadrum video featuring multicultural drummers playing dhol and Indigenous drums. Pre-registration for the Guinness World Records™ attempt closes at by midnight on Wednesday, June 23.

“So far, we have 13 countries, 86 Canadian cities and 17 international cities registered,” says Richard Wong, national chair of the Legacy 150 Celebration Society. “Everyone is welcome to join this free, exciting initiative and help us set this new record. Additionally, Virtual Surrey Canada Day, hosted by CTV Morning Live TV personalities Keri Adams and Jason Pires, will feature special guest appearances from notable and local athletes and sports groups including Olympic gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, Team Canada Soccer, Team Canada Softball, BC Lions, Canucks Autism Network, Surrey United, Surrey Falcons, and Surrey FC. The free, virtual event will include music and dance performances, a “Family Show” for kids and seniors, arts & crafts, the Surrey Honda live car raffle, and finish with virtual fireworks.

The Downtown Surrey BIA will be handing out free Canada-themed craft kits at Central City Shopping Centre on Thursday, June 24 from 1 – 7 pm Instructions on how to make these crafts will be aired within the livestream during the Family Show at 10:30 am.

Virtual Surrey Canada Day takes place on July 1, broadcast on the Surrey Canada Day Facebook page and the City of Surrey YouTube channel. Programming begins at 10:30am for kids and seniors, with a 6:00 p.m. for the main event.
