A highlight during summers at Surrey Art Gallery is the Arts Council of Surrey’s juried exhibition. This year marks the 35th edition.
Both emerging and established artists submitted work in an open competition. The jury chose over 50 works in diverse media: paintings, drawings, glasswork, sculptures, fabrics, photographs, and more. The results convey the extraordinary variety of techniques practiced by local artists.
Outstanding entries this year include a trompe l’oeil painting of a book, a sculpture of an ambulance made of glass shards, and what may be the first interactive digital installation in the exhibit’s history.
The jury nominates artworks to receive first, second, third, and honourable mention awards across several categories: 1) painting; 2) drawing, mixed-media, and print-making on paper; 3) sculpture and fibre art; 4) photography; and 5) digital, performative and new media art. Selected works show technical skill, innovative artistic thinking, and strength in addressing their theme. Visitors are also invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award announced at the end of the exhibit.
